Police have charged Jeremy Walker, 33, of Winfield, with child abuse resulting in injury and child abuse creating risk for injury for what investigators alleged happened Oct. 29.

Medical officials at Charleston Area Medical Center called police after they discovered the infant had suffered a displaced skull fracture. Police said the girl’s mother, Kayla Vanhorn, originally told them the couple’s 3-year-old son may have accidentally fallen on his sister. She later changed her story and told police about the ax handle.

The criminal complaint also said Walker tried to stop his wife from calling emergency personnel.

Walker is in the Western Regional Jail on $250,000 bail.
