HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall fans collectively celebrated before moments later letting out a groan in unison as the Herd made its first appearance in the College Football Playoff committee rankings.
Marshall came in 24th in the committee rankings, the first time all season the undefeated Herd has been included in the rankings. However, moments later Marshall found it was behind fellow G5 school and two-loss Boise State. The committee ranked the Broncos 23rd.
The highest ranked conference champion from the G5 schools receives an automatic bid to one of the six major bowl games. Currently, the rankings put 9-2 Boise State as the front-runner for that bid. The Broncos’ losses consist of a 35-13 loss to Ole Miss and a 28-14 defeat to Air Force.
Marshall has 12 straight wins, going back to last season and has won 13 consecutive games at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, where the Herd will finish the regular season on Friday. Marshall will host Western Kentucky Friday then will host the Conference USA Championship game on Dec. 6.
