Staten & Carter: WVU had to fight letdown after Puerto Rico

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Juwan Staten and Jevon Carter said West Virginia felt like it was battling not only VMI, but also the temptation to ease back into action after knocking off UConn three nights earlier.

The Mountaineers maintained the momentum from their Puerto Rico excursion by whipping VMI 103-72.

“Its easy when you get a win like that to come in here and play down to the competition,” Staten said. “That was something we were really trying to fight against.”

The freshman Carter said the team quickly got refocused after downing UConn.

“After we won we couldn’t go out because that wasn’t a vacation, it was a business trip,” he said. “If we had lost this game that Puerto Rico trip didn’t matter.”
