WHEELING, W.Va. — On Black Friday, residents in Wheeling will have a chance to weigh in on a possible tax increase that could add to their shopping bills during the next holiday season.
A special Wheeling City Council meeting at 12 p.m. Friday will include a public hearing on Wheeling’s proposal to add .5 percent to the current sales tax, taking it to 1 percent total.
It’s estimated the increase would add up to $2.1 million each year which would go into police and fire pensions.
As part of the tax proposal, Wheeling would also reduce its business and occupation tax by approximately six percent.
