Fire fee increase approved in Mercer County

PRINCETON, W.Va. — The Mercer County Commission approved a new fire fee for the county in a Tuesday morning meeting in Princeton.

The fee, which has been longed talked about and the subject of several public meetings, could generate more than $800,000 annually to help volunteer fire departments.

The approved plan includes a $20 initial fee for residential and non-residential structures along with 1 cent per square foot charge.

Commissioners said the fire fee only applies to properties outside of Bluefield and Princeton. It goes into effect July 1, 2015.

It’s been nearly two dozen years since the last fire fee increase in the county.
