HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Spring Valley quarterback Tyler Brown set multiple school records during his time with the Timberwolves, finishing his senior season this year with 1,192 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on 119 carries. He also completed 77-of-144 passes for 1,424 yards 18 more touchdowns and eight interceptions.
He now owns Spring Valley’s school record for career touchdown passes and passing yards. He set single season school records for passing yards, touchdown passes, rushing touchdowns and points scored. Brown also stands as the winningest quarterback in school history.
Brown had multiple offers at the D-II level to play in the Mountain East Conference, but Robert Morris, which plays in the D-I FCS, started recruiting him at the mid-point of the season and eventually offered a scholarship — one he accepted late last month.
“I was not very heavily recruited at all,” Brown said. “I had a lot of scholarship offers from the D-II schools in the Mountain East, but besides that I wasn’t heavily recruited.
“Robert Morris contacted me during the year and we started talking then,” he continued. “I’m walking into a pretty good situation there. They just got a new head coach and they changed up their offensive scheme, which is basically the same system we run at Spring Valley. They want me to fight for the (quarterback) right off the bat.”
Robert Morris is coached by former Pittsburgh Steelers’ player John Banaszak.”It’s pretty cool going in and meeting him – he lets you try on his Super Bowl rings,” Brown said. “It’s always been a dream for me to play in college, especially to play Division-I (FCS). It’s always been a goal for me and I’m glad I finally reached it.
“I didn’t have very good seasons my sophomore and junior years,” Brown continued. “I knew (getting to the next level) was possible, but I didn’t know if it would happen or not. Coming into my senior year I knew I had to work as hard as I could and put up some numbers. I’m pretty happy at this point that all the hard work has paid off and I put up good enough numbers to get a full ride to college.”
Brown was a guest on the MetroNews High School Sportsline — his complete interview is posted at the top of the page.
