CHARLESTON, W.Va. — State lawmakers have three days of interim committee meetings scheduled in Charleston beginning Monday. As part of that schedule, members of two committees will tour West Virginia American Water Company’s Kanawha Valley Plant Monday.
The Joint Legislative Oversight Commission on State Water Resources and the Joint Standing Committee on the Judiciary will begin a tour of the Charleston plant at 10 a.m.
The water going into the plant was contaminated with MCHM following the Jan. 9 spill of the chemical just up the Elk River at a tank farmed owned by Freedom Industries. A Do Not Use water order went into effect for residents in parts of nine counties.
Also Monday, lawmakers are scheduled to receive updates on workforce investment, the state corrections system and higher education.
The transition of power from Democrats to Republicans also continues at the statehouse. Republicans won’t officially take over until the first day of the regular session Jan. 14.
This week’s interim committee meetings will stretch into Wednesday.
