CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Charleston man died of multiple gunshot wounds after a Wednesday morning incident outside his Hunt Ave. on the city’s West Side.
Police said Winston Thomas, 47, died of multiple gunshot wounds. He was shot several times in front of his home and died on his front porch.
“Right now we’re still processing the crime scene and interviewing witnesses,” said Charleston Police Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper.
Investigators taped off a large area around the home and surrounding block. Small evidence markers dotted the street in front of the home as detectives continued to look for clues.
“We won’t know until after the autopsy exactly how many shots were fired,” Cooper said. “We’re still processing the crime scene and evidenced there may also help us answer those questions.”
Police haven’t identified a suspect in the case, but say the shooter fled the area in a vehicle. Several people who apparently saw the shooting were gone by the time police arrived. They are hoping the witnesses will come forward with more information to help with the case.
Thomas was known to the Charleston Police Department, but Cooper didn’t elaborate on what past dealings the department has had with the victim. Although they are comparing notes, police don’t believe the shooting was related to a another shooting shooting in Rand Wednesday morning in which a suspect identified as Leonard Thomas was arrested.
“We are comparing notes with the sheriff’s department to be doubly sure,” Lt. Cooper said. “But right now we know of no connection.”
