Charges upgraded to murder in Kanawha County shooting

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. — A Kanawha County man shot in the head Wednesday morning at a home in Rand has died.

Court information indicated Gerald Maxwell, 28, of Rand, died on Wednesday night, prompting upgraded charges on Thursday against his alleged shooter.

Leonard Thomas, 44, of Rand, was originally charged with malicious wounding. On Thursday, he was charged with murder. Thomas was being held in the South Central Regional Jail on $100,000 bail.

Deputies with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department said Maxwell was shot in the head at a home on Starling Drive.

Several schools in Eastern Kanawha County were operating on lockdowns, as a precaution, while the search for the shooter continued on Wednesday.
