Arrest made in Charleston murder

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Charleston man is in custody charged with Wednesday’s murder of a man on the city’s west side. Winston Thomas, 47, was shot dead in front of his home on Hunt Avenue back on Wednesday morning.

Police on Thursday evening arrested Steven “Gypsy” John, 39, of Charleston on charges of first and second degree murder.

According Charleston Police, John and two other individuals went to Thomas’ home on Hunt Avenue with the intent of a drug deal. Those two individuals, identified as Bradford Fisher and Tommisina Brooks, told police they saw Brooks and John get out of the van and meet Thomas on Hunt Avenue.

The criminal complaint indicated Thomas and John got into a fight, which escalated into gunfire. Fisher and Brooks say John got back into the van with blood on his hands and they fled the area.

Police found Thomas dead on his porch.
