Blankenship’s holiday travel request rejected

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Former Massey Energy president and CEO Don Blankenship won’t be going home for Christmas.

Blankenship wanted his provisions of bond adjusted so he could travel to his current home in Nevada for the holidays. Federal Judge Irene Berger rejected the motion Monday on appeal. A federal magistrate judge rejected the original request.

Blankenship is only allowed to travel in southern West Virginia, parts of eastern Kentucky and Washington, D.C. as part of his current bond.

Blankenship is free on bond after being indicted on charges connected to how he allegedly operated the Upper Big Branch mine, which exploded in 2010 and claimed the lives of 29 miners.
