1 dead, 3 injured in Upshur County collision

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — One person died after a head on collision Tuesday afternoon in Upshur County.

Upshur County Chief Deputy Virgil Miller a four-door sedan and UPS delivery truck collided on Route 20 about a quarter of a mile from the entrance to Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

“The initial indication is the car went left of center and struck the UPS truck head on,” he said.

The car was traveling northbound on Route 20.  The wreck occurred about 2:00 p.m.

“The woman driving the car was removed by fire personnel and she was life-flighted to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.  There was another female in the car, a passenger.  She was deceased,” explained Miller.

The driver of the UPS truck and his assistant were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon for treatment.

Route 20 was closed for at least three hours as police investigated a cause and cleared the roadway.

“We’re still in the preliminary stages.  We did have a re-constructionist on scene.  Actually, about ten minutes until 5 we were able to open Route 20 back up. It had been closed.  We had to detour school buses and traffic,” said Miller.

The victims’ names have not been released.

“We’re having difficulty locating the next of kin.  We’re actually going to have to officers on the ground and try to locate them.  They are, from indications, from Upshur County,” explained Miller.
