Bluefield football great Pete Wood dies

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — A football legend in Bluefield has died. Andrew “Pete” Wood, who was a star running back at Bluefield High School and went on to play at West Virginia University, died Friday in Detroit, Mich. at the age of 63.

Wood played for Bluefield High School from 1965-1967 and was a member of the 1965 and 1967 championship teams.

He graduated in 1968, the year he was selected as a Parade All-American, and continued his football career as a fullback at West Virginia University where he played from 1969-1971 under Jim Carlen and Bobby Bowden.

During that time, he lead the nation in rushing for two years.

Wood was inducted into the Bluefield High School Hall of Fame in November.

Early reports indicated Wood died from a blood clot while recovering from back surgery.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete as of Sunday morning.
