CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Texas man who allegedly shot and injured two Lewisburg police officers New Year’s Day was released from Charleston Area Medical Center Tuesday afternoon.
Edward Campbell, 54, of Alvin, Texas, suffered a gunshot wound to one of his legs when Lewisburg PD Lt. Jeromy Dove returned fired after Campbell allegedly fired shots at him and patrol officer Nicholas Sams.
Police said Campbell was driving a stolen red pick-up truck when he pulled off of Interstate 64 near the Lewisburg exit moments after his son, Eric Campbell, 21, had been initially stopped by Dove and Sams who were checking on a license plate.
The elder Campbell allegedly opened fire on the officers. One bullet struck Lt. Dove’s radio microphone and grazed his neck and another went into the bulletproof vest that Sams was wearing. Both officers were in the hospital for about 24 hours.
Edward Campbell will be held at South Central Regional Jail on two counts of attempted murder of a police officer and two counts of malicious assault on a police officer. Eric Campbell, who is lodged in the Southern Regional Jail, is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Greenbrier County Magistrate Court.
The Campbells are the lead suspects in the New Year’s Day murders of Jerome and Dora Faulkner of Granville County, N.C. Their bodies were found in the back of the pick-up Edward Campbell was driving.
