NEW MARTINSVILLE, W.Va. — A snow system that moved across parts of northern and eastern West Virginia Tuesday forced the cancellation of 31 of the state’s 55 school systems.
There was a definitive snow line that moved across parts of Jackson and Braxton counties. Most all areas north of that line got snow but southern counties didn’t.
The Pittsburgh office of the National Weather Service said snow totals ranged from just under two inches in Hancock County to more than five inches in the Preston County town of Aurora. Snow had reached five inches in parts of Tucker County mid-morning with about the same total along the Ohio River in New Martinsville.
Another problem spot was the Parkersburg area that reported 4-5 inches of snow.
Snow removal crews with the state Division of Highways had a difficult time keeping up with the rate of snow. A truck working a Marshall County was destroyed by fire. The driver got out safely.
Meteorologists said the next weather concern would be frigid temperatures Wednesday into Thursday.
