Man arrested after struggle with Kanawha County deputies

CAMPBELL’S CREEK, W.Va. — Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies subdued a man Friday morning who they said at least twice reached for a gun hidden in his jacket.

Deputies said they responded to a call at a residence on Coal Fork Drive near Campbell’s Creek after Blackburn Lee Baldwin said he had given James Daugherty, 20, of Charleston, who was hitchhiking, a ride, but Daugherty refused to leave when the Baldwin arrived at his residence.

When deputies arrived they said Daugherty reached inside his coat. He initially ignored the commands to show his hands. A deputy then ordered him by gunpoint to kneel on the ground and he did.

As the deputy tried to handcuff Daugherty a struggle took place and Daugherty once again reached inside his jacket. Deputies subdued him and found a 9mm pistol in his jacket loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition. Daughterty took off running after he was handcuffed but was chased down and transported to the South Central Regional Jail. He allegedly spat on one of the deputies during the arrest.

Baldwin later told deputies Daugherty wasn’t a hitchhiker but he had given him a ride around Charleston while he sold drugs. Baldwin made the initial call to 911 after Daugherty allegedly threatened him with the gun because he wouldn’t give him his car.

Daugherty is lodged in the South Central Regional Jail on $80,000 bail on the Kanawha County charges and outstanding charges from Cabell County.
