Troopers charge former hospital worker with sexual abuse

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A former worker at a Morgantown-based psychiatric hospital allegedly sexually abused a 15-year-old boy who was a patient there.

State police filed charges Friday against Katie Miller, 22, of Smithfield, Pa., charging her with sexual abuse by a person in a position of trust and third degree sexual assault. The crimes allegedly happened at Chestnut Ridge Hospital.

West Virginia State Police Sgt. Adam Scott, with the Crimes Against Childrens Unit, said a coworker reported questionable behavior to a manager who then notified police.

“They just witnessed red flags in reference to their behavior with each other. It’s a good thing the other employee reported that and got us involved,” Scott said.

Miller was a floor worker at Chestnut Ridge.

Sgt. Scott said the hospital’s management has worked closely with investigators since the probe began last month.

“They were very cooperative for other staff interviews and speaking with managers in reference to this investigation and helped out quite a bit on us gaining information on the unfortunate incident,” said Scott.

Miller was arraigned and posted $10,000 bond. She had no prior criminal record.
