Young South Charleston girls basketball team looking to contend for Class AAA title

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The South Charleston girls basketball team turned some heads earlier this season with a 76-62 win over last year’s state runner-up Parkersburg South.

While the Patriots were without one of their best players, Keya Bartlett, due to an ankle injury, the win still was a significant message to Class AAA championship contenders.

“We’ve won a couple of really tight games where our kids responded well when they had to down the stretch,” said head coach Gary Greene. “There have been some pleasant surprises and our kids have matured a lot since last year. We have matured a lot since last year – we’re starting three sophomores and our first player off of the bench is a sophomore as well. They need to grow up a lot quicker, still, if we’re going to make it (to the state tournament.”

Talia Cashwell, a junior put up 21 points in that win over Parkersburg South, while Aaliyah Dunham added 18.  The undefeated Black Eagles and Patriots are set for a rematch on Tuesday of this week. The complete interview with Greene is posted at the top of the page.
