Mattox welcomes possible performance audit

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The House of Delegates Finance Committee could take up a bill this week that calls for a performance audit of the state Division of Highways. It’s a proposal state Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox welcomes.

“Actually that’s a very good idea,” Mattox told members of the finance committee last week. “When I became (DOH) commissioner back in 2005 we did the very same thing.”

That performance audit was done by PRAG, Public Resource Advisory Group. Mattox said several recommendations came out of the study.

“The six-year highway plan, our core maintenance plan. We auctioned off a bunch of surplus equipment. We transferred the Courtesy Patrol over to tourism,” he told committee members.

Mattox said a lot of time has passed since the last extensive review so he welcomes the possibility.

“That’s been 10 years ago. It’s certainly time to take a fresh look at it to see if there are any other fresh ideas that we’re unaware of that could provide some savings,” he said.
