WVU women upset No. 24 Sooners

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — With Bre McDonald scoring  a career-high 19 points and Averee Fields producing a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double, West Virginia knocked off No. 24 Oklahoma 78-69 on Sunday.

The Mountaineers (13-8, 3-6) enjoyed a much-needed upset despite getting only nine points from Bria Holmes, ending her 23-game streak in double digits.

Peyton Little scored 15 and Gabbi Ortiz added 11 to pace the Sooners (13-7, 7-2), who shot only 38 percent and were outrebounded 41-33.

McDonald’s big offensive day was huge, and she also made five steals. Fields added four assists and three steals.

The Mountaineers committed 22 of the game’s 43 turnovers but built a 14-point first half lead before a season-best crowd of 4,069.

“Needless to say that was a good win for us,” said West Virginia coach Mike Carey. “I thought the bench came up big and played hard. We got out to the lanes for the first time this year, and we were able to create some turnovers. We were sloppy at times, but overall I thought our effort was really good.”

Oklahoma narrowed the deficit to three points on three occasions in the second half, the latest coming at with 9:39 left. However, West Virginia answered with a six-point run and eventually made five free throws down the stretch to hold on.

The teams split the home-and-home season series, with Oklahoma winning 71-60 in Norman on Jan. 4.

West Virginia resumes action at home Wednesday at 7 p.m. against TCU.
