ANMOORE, W.Va. — An 18-year-old man was killed during a domestic dispute that left Anmoore police chief Don Quinn wounded, said West Virginia state police.
Quinn was dispatched to an apartment complex on Travato Street at 2 p.m. after a 911 caller reported a man holding a woman against her will. When the chief arrived and found the front door ajar, troopers said the man quickly slammed the door shut.
Troopers said it appears the teenager then shot himself with a rifle and the bullet passed through the apartment wall and struck Quinn in the elbow. Quinn, who troopers said thought he was being shot at, returned fire. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.
Quinn was treated and released from United Hospital Center.
A woman, who police identify as the victim of the domestic dispute, was not seriously injured. State police said her name would not be released.
The identity of the suspect was not released, pending notification of family.
A witness from the neighborhood, who wished to not be identified, said she and coworkers were unaware of the shooting until the authorities poured in.
“We heard a lot of sirens which drew our attention to the outside and saw there were several police cars coming to the business over the hill from where we’re at.”
Quinn joined the Anmoore police department in 1993 and was named chief two years later.
