Berkeley teacher accused of being drunk at school

BUNKER HILL, W.Va. — A Berkeley County physical education teacher was placed on administrative leave without pay after being arrested at Bunker Hill Elementary for allegedly being drunk at school.

Chad William Powell, 42, of Bunker Hill, was released from jail on $3,000 bail following his arraignment Friday. He was charged with public intoxication and causing a disturbance at school, both misdemeanors.

School officials contacted Berkeley County law enforcement officers Friday morning.

In court records, deputies with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department said Powell’s blood alcohol level at the time of his arrest was .094. The legal driving limit in West Virginia is .08.

Powell reportedly has worked for the Berkeley County school system since 1999.
