Beckley singer proud of roots; Cody Wickline advances on The Voice

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Fans of NBC’s The Voice are learning about Beckley’s Cody Wickline following his performance that aired on the popular show’s blind auditions Monday night.

Wickline spoke with WSAZ-TV Tuesday and said he was proud to be a “small town country boy from West Virginia.”

“I’ve never had anything handed to me in life and I’m proud of that,” he said.

Wickline sang George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and caused all four judges to turn around their seats. He eventually chose the team led by country music star Blake Shelton. He’ll part of the battle rounds in the coming weeks.

Wickline told WSAZ he’s living a dream.

“My grandpa, he was a coal miner. He worked in the coal mines for 30 years and he has Black Lung and everything. I was kind of raised in the mindset if you want anything in life you have to work hard to get it,” he said.

Wickline said his success on the season premiere of the popular show was a big boost.

“It really makes you feel that you can do anything that you want to do as long as you keep your faith and keep your work ethic and keep working hard toward your goal,” he said.

Wickline is a nursing student at Bluefield State College.
