Turnpike motorists crash into large logs in Raleigh County

GHENT, W.Va. — A handful of motorists on the West Virginia Turnpike were faced with an unexpected obstacle early Wednesday morning after a truck carrying logs lost its load.

The driver of the truck lost control heading south near Ghent in Raleigh County and part of the load went bounding into the southbound lanes. Six vehicles crashed into the logs but no one was seriously injured.

“I controlled my vehicle as best I could and ended up in the median after I was airborne for a few feet. All told, there were 5 other vehicles who meet the same fate,” Mercer County Senior Deputy Wardell Wilborn told WVVA-TV in Bluefield “None of us saw the logs until [it was] too late and none of us saw the logging truck that had wrecked. I praise God as 7 drivers and 1 passenger are safe.”

The collisions took place at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.
