The Girl Scout cookies are here

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The cookies have arrived. More than a million boxes of Girl Scout cookies are in the process of being distributed throughout West Virginia and the other states that make up the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council as part of the annual sale.

“Between Marietta, Oh. and Charleston, there were 95,000 packages and Morgantown’s delivery this weekend is 70,000 packages,” said Jennifer Brown, director of community engagement for Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council, of the cookie case deliveries.

Boxes of Samoas were stacked up for distribution in Charleston on Friday.

Each case contains about 12 boxes of cookies and Girl Scout leaders and volunteers were rolling through the Charleston distribution site on a cold Friday morning to collect their loads from tractor trailers packed full of cookies.

“They can get those cookies distributed to the people who have put in a pre-order and also get ready for those booth sales that will be starting pretty soon,” Brown said.

Cookie distributions were scheduled to continue on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Marietta Fairgrounds and on Monday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mylan Park in Morgantown.

For those three sites, pre-orders this year added up to more than 933,000 boxes, an increase from 927,000 boxes sold during the pre-sale period last year. Proceeds from the cookie sale go to the Black Diamond Council’s operating budget and to girl and volunteer programs.

“These girls, they set goals at the beginning of the year to decide what trips they want to take, what community service projects they want to do and that’s how they set their goals on how many boxes of cookies to sell,” said Brown.

This year, she said, many Girl Scouts want to be part of Jamboree at the Summit planned for July 22-26 at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Fayette County.

Cookies can still be ordered through a local troop, by calling 304-345-7722 or by going online at www.bdgsc.org to find a local cookie booth.

Working with about 4,000 volunteers, the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council serves nearly 12,000 girls total in 61 counties in West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio and Maryland.
