One charged after deadly weekend wreck in Wood County

WOOD COUNTY, W.Va. — A man was charged with DUI with reckless disregard causing death in Wood County after an early Saturday morning wreck that happened near Williamstown.

Deputies with the Wood County Sheriff’s Department said Joseph S. Urbanek, Jr., no age or hometown available, lost control of his vehicle on North Oak Grove Road after receiving a text message. The vehicle went over an embankment shortly before 4 a.m. and hit a tree.

His passenger, identified as Shawn M. Wilfong from Mineral Wells, no age available, was thrown from the vehicle and was pinned between the car and the tree, according to reports from the scene. Wilfong later died at Camden Clark Medical Center.

Urbanek could face additional charges.

In a separate weekend wreck, deputies with the Ohio County Sheriff’s Department said one person was killed and another seriously injured in an accident that happened in Elm Grove early Saturday morning.

The driver, who was identified as Michael Green of Bridgeport, died in the wreck after losing control of his vehicle. His passenger, said to be from Wheeling, was critically injured.

The investigation continued there on Sunday.
