Men arrested in WV cop shootings may face death penalty in NC

GRANVILLE COUNTY, NC — The father and son charged in the Jan. 1 shootings of two Lewisburg police officers will appear for a death penalty hearing later this month in Granville County, NC.

Edward, 54, and Eric Campbell, 21, are now both lodged in North Carolina where they allegedly killed Jerome and Dora Faulkner before Eric Campbell was stopped by Lewisburg police on Interstate 64 near Lewisburg. A few minutes after that stop, Edward Campbell shot Lt. Jeromy Dove and patrolman Nicholas Sams. The bodies of the Faulkners were found in the back of the truck Edward Campbell was driving.

Both men were eventually transported back to North Carolina.

North Carolina District Attorney Michael Waters announced Thursday a Rule 24 hearing would be conducted March 25. A North Carolina superior judge will decide if the state will be seeking the death penalty in the case.

The men were indicted on charges of first degree murder, first degree burglary, robbery with a dangerous weapon, second degree Arson, two counts of cruelty to animals, larceny of a motor vehicle, identity theft and financial card theft. They allegedly randomly chose the Faulkners to attack during a crime spree that spread through several states. The Campbells are from Texas.

The Lewisburg officers were injured but have since returned to work.
