MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Quarterback Paul Millard, who redshirted last fall with possible designs on returning as a fifth-year senior in 2015, has decided against playing football for West Virginia next season.
With junior Skyler Howard, redshirt freshman William Crest and two midterm recruits enrolled for spring practice, Millard was viewed as a safety net in the quarterback competition.
“Paul Millard came in and told me that his career here at West Virginia is over,” coach Dana Holgorsen announced Monday. “Whether he moves on (elsewhere) to go play football or not is something he’s unsure of.”
Because Millard is on pace to graduate this summer, he possesses a full range of transfer options should he choose to use his final season of eligibility.
A lightly recruited prospect in 2011 despite posting massive passing numbers at Flower Mound, Texas, Millard spent two seasons as Geno Smith’s understudy and became West Virginia’s opening-day starter in 2013. He held the job for two games and later started the Week 11 loss at Kansas as a replacement for the injured Clint Trickett.
Millard’s best performance likely came during Week 10 that season against Texas, a relief stint in which he threw for 259 yards and led WVU to 31 points in a 47-40 overtime loss.
In 18 career appearances, Millard threw nine touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 109-of-202 passes (54 percent).
