One killed in Marshall Co. mine roof, rib collapse

CAMERON, W.Va. — A roof and rib fall at a Marshall County coal mine Sunday night killed an Ohio man according to the state Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training.

Investigators said John Garloch, 45, of Neffs, Ohio, an assistant longwall coordinator at the McElroy Mine, was killed in the collapse that happened at around 9 p.m. at the Cameron Portal.

Two other miners were injured and taken to area hospitals. One of them has since been released.

The mine is owned Murray Energy. The accident happened at the mine’s 12 East longwall face.

Federal and state mine safety investigators were on the scene Monday.

The West Virginia State Senate observed a moment of silence for the miners in Monday morning’s floor session.
