Truck driver identified in fatal mine site accident

CARBON, W.Va. — The state Office of Mine Safety Health and Training released the name Wednesday of the man killed in a fuel truck wreck at a Raleigh County surface mine Tuesday.

Investigators said Von Edwards Bower, 52, of Coal City, drove for Rogers Petroleum. He had five years experience.

State inspectors were still at the Republic Energy site Wednesday afternoon looking for what possibly caused Bower to lose control of the truck. It overturned.

Republic Energy is a subsidiary of Alpha Natural Resources. Alpha said Tuesday it wasn’t clear whether the wreck was mine related or due to natural causes. There were apparently no eyewitnesses to the 3:30 a.m. Tuesday crash. The truck had a load of diesel fuel.
