Kanawha County Board of Ed begins annual superintendent review

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Kanawha County Board of Education started their annual evaluation for school superintendent Dr. Ron Duerring at a Monday meeting.

Duerring could receive a pay increase, pending the approval of his next contract. Currently, Duerring’s salary sits at $157,500.

“Dr. Duerring continues to provide KCS with strong and effective leadership. His accountability toward fiscal stewardship at this system are greatly appreciated, as well as his pursuits of strong, academic programs for all learners,” said Robin Rector, president of the Kanawha County BOE, in her closing statement.

Rector said the West Virginia State Department of Education provided the county with a two part evaluation they are going through.

“The first part of it we’re allowed, as a board, to create some goals for the superintendent. The second part of it are goals that are prescribed by the state department. There’s quite a number of them,” said Rector.

Rector said the board will take more time looking at each goal on the evaluation list before making a decision. The goals relate to academics, safety in the environment, faculty development of teachers, and the growth of learning within the students.

“Dr. Duerring has lots of data to share with us over those things and we like to take our time to really review those documents carefully,” said Rector.

Rector said the board could possibly renew Duerring’s contract at the next meeting. She said it’s a significant point of discussion, especially for in the Kanawha County school system.

“It’s very important that the superintendent of Kanawha County schools, the largest system in the state, gets a competitive salary,” said Rector.

The next Kanawha County BOE meeting is scheduled for Monday, Apr. 6.
