19 bridges to get work on Charleston interstate system

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The posted speed limit is going to be 45 miles-per-hour through a busy stretch of Interstate 64 in Charleston beginning in the next few days through the end of October. The state DOH has hired a contractor to work on 19 interstate bridges.

Kokosing Construction Company will be paid $18.1 million to replace expansion joints, put down new concrete and strengthen existing bridge decks between the Brooks Street on-ramp and the Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge, part of the busiest stretch of interstate in the state.

DOH spokesman Brent Walker said most of the interstate system through Charleston is elevated and it’s time to maintenance the many bridges that make up that system. He said traffic will be impacted day and night with through lanes being switched throughout the project.

“It will be slow but continuous movement (of traffic),” Walker said. “People that we’ve talked to say they would rather get it done all at once so we’re just not in this constant state of construction.”

Equipment will be moved into place beginning this weekend with the actual construction starting in early April. The project completion date is Oct. 28.
