CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Three firms interested in designing the $59 million renovation of the Charleston Civic Center will make formal presentations Thursday.
Charleston City Manager David Molgaard said the three firms, which the city has been working with for several months, turned in their final proposals Wednesday. The presentations will take place behind-closed-doors Thursday. A committee will review the proposals, score them and make its top choice around the middle of the month.
“After we’ve picked a presumptive awardee, then the negotiations begin,” Molgaard explained. “There will be a lot of further refinement as it relates to the scope of the project.
BBL Carlton, Masaro Construction and PG Dick Construction have designed a new look Civic Center that features the Elk River side of the facility. Molgaard said the process has been exciting thus far and there’s a lot more work to do before the actual work begins.
“It’s a two-year construction period but we’re going to keep that facility open through that whole period of time,” he said. “There will be areas that we won’t be able to use at certain parts of the phasing, but for the most part that’s going to be an open and operating facility for the whole construction period.”
Molgaard said some demolition work may take place, particularly the kitchen area which he said needs to be razed. The project is expected to start this fall and be completed by the fall of 2017.
