Motorcyclist killed in I-79 crash

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — A motorcyclist was killed on Interstate 79 Wednesday afternoon in Marion County near the Monongalia County line.

Authorities said 911 operators were informed of a crash in the northbound lane of the interstate just before 3 p.m. The northbound lanes were closed for at least an hour and southbound lanes were closed for a short time as well.

State police identify the victim as William Cody Vandergrift, 19, of Fairmont.  Authorities say the motorcycle collided with a bridge rail and came to rest on the Interstate.

County officials advised drivers to avoid the area and use Route 73 as an alternate route.

State police are still investigating the crash.
