Woman swept away and killed by high water

EAST LYNN, W.Va.– A Wayne County woman died Friday night after being swept away in a flash flood near her home.

State police said Readith Hughes, 62, of Rowe Hollow Road had decided to head to a nearby church for a Good Friday service when she was overtaken by the high water.

Troopers said Hughes told her husband she was going to check on the water at about 8 p.m. Her body was found a short time later about a quarter-mile downstream.

High water was reported in East Lynn and other areas of Wayne County Friday evening. There was a flash flood warning at the time of Hughes’ death.

Meteorologists said 2-4 inches of rain was recorded from Thursday night through Friday in some parts of the Mountain State.
