Man arrested for viewing child porn at Culture Center Library

CHARLESTON W.Va. — A Mercer County man was arrested and charged with accessing child pornography from a public computer on Capitol Complex grounds.

Bluefield resident Matthew Jacob Newsome, 21, faces a felony charge over the Feb. 12 incident at the Culture Center Library, where the public computer terminals are monitored. Capitol police were alerted by the Intelligence Fusion Center once criminal activity was detected.

Police searched the computer involved and found a large quantity of images depicting minor male and female children having sex, and some involving adults.

After Monday’s arrest, Newsome appeared in Mercer County Magistrate court before being taken to Southern Regional Jail.

The Culture Center Library is operated by the West Virginia Library Commission.
