Speed believed to be factor in Mon County crash

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– Monongalia County Sheriff’s deputies believe speed was a factor in a single-vehicle crash that sent two men to the hospital early Saturday morning.

The crash happened at the intersection of Chaplin Road and U.S. Route 19 at about 5:45 a.m.

Sheriff’s officials said Andrew Mainenti of Weirton was driving a 2001 Kia Sportage north on U.S. 19 at a high rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle. The car careened into the grassy median and slammed into a steel traffic light pole.

Mainenti and his passenger, Bryce Mullins of Follansbee, were taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital. Mainenti was listed in critical condition and Mullins in stable condition.
