WVSSAC meetings begin, new director could be named

ROANOKE, W.Va. — The West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission is holding its yearly Board of Control meeting at the Stonewall Resort on Monday and Tuesday. And by the time it ends, a new leader could be chosen.

During the meetings, the Board of Control could select a replacement for executive director Gary Ray, who announced in January his plans to retire at the outset of 2016.

“I’ve reached retirement age and I think we’ve done some good things here,” Ray said then. “I just feel good about the office—it’s in good shape and I’m ready to go spend some time with my grandchildren.

An announcement on Ray’s replacement could be made as early as Tuesday. Ray, meanwhile, has been recovering from a second surgery on the hip he broke back in March.

Ray has led the high school athletics organization since July 2007.
