CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Kanawha County school administrators haven’t settled on a candidate for the Capital High School principal post and didn’t submit a recommendation to the Board of Education on Thursday night.
Six candidates were interviewed earlier in the day, but no offer was extended.
“We are expecting they will be ready to make a recommendation to us at our meeting on April 27,” Board president Robin Rector said.
Capital, one of West Virginia’s largest schools with more than 1,200 students, has been in search of a principal since the resignation of Clinton Giles in February. At the time Giles faced a misdemeanor charge for allegedly delaying to report a sexual assault at the school, which later was dropped.
Kanawha County Superintendant of Schools Ron Duerring said curriculum and academics is a top priority for the new principal.
“We’re looking for somebody who has the leadership ability to move the curriculum forward,” Duerring said. “It is a focused school and we need to improve the academics up there. And we’re looking for somebody that’s open to having the community become involved in the school.”
Rector and Duerring both pointed out that every candidate has strengths.
