CAMC opens its doors to a new Cancer Center

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –– Hundreds of Charleston Area Medical Center employees donated to the hospital’s new state-of-the-art Cancer Center that is set to open in the coming weeks.

Over 600 employees contributed nearly $650,000 toward “The Power of Many” campaign. The three-story building in Kanawha City now houses all of the hospital’s cancer programs.

Ashley King, a CAMC employee, said she had a personal connection as to why she made a donation.

“I had an aunt that was treated for cancer, so I was passionate about them providing services for our community and enhancing our current services,” said King.

Polly Kidd, another employee who donated, said she likes that everyone can come to one building compared to scattering throughout the three hospitals.

“I also have a lot of personal connections with cancer,” said Kidd, “It’s just the vision of the whole building and everyone working together.”

CAMC hosted a private event Friday to celebrate all the people who came together to produce the cancer center.

The center features a massive “Power of Many” donor wall inside that displays all the names of the people who donated.

“This represents the $15 million that was raised to make the Cancer Center happen,” said Gail Pitchford, the president of the CAMC Foundation.

The wall lists the names of the donors who wanted to honor a loved one they either lost from cancer or who is currently struggling.

David Ramsey, president of CAMC, said the goal of the project was to construct a healing place to give patients the best environment for treatment and support.

“Hopefully they’ll think about the beauty of West Virginia and the facility when they’re in here and not be so much focused on their own personal challenges,” said Ramsey.

Ramsey said they received contributions as low as $2 from employees that felt compelled to help the campaign.

The CAMC Cancer Center will held a a public celebration event Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.
