Berkeley County man arraigned after heroin death

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A Berkeley County man was arraigned during a federal court hearing Monday for allegedly causing the death of a woman who purchased heroin from him.

Federal prosecutors said the woman died after using heroin she purchased from Michael Jose Roberts, 62, of Martinsburg, in May 2014.

Earlier this month, a federal grand jury returned an indictment on Roberts. He faces heroin distribution charges with up to 20 years, or possible life behind bars, and a fine of up to $1 million.

Roberts is scheduled to go on trial May 26.

The Eastern Panhandle Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative, and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.
