MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Three unopposed races in Morgantown’s city election may not help a traditionally low voter turnout.
However, according to Linda Tucker, Morgantown city clerk, 431 voters cast early ballots in this spring’s election. That number is up from 370 in the 2013 city election.
Current Mayor Jenny Selin, Deputy Mayor Marti Shamberger and Councilman Wes Nugent aren’t being challenged.
Three certified candidates are write-ins.
Morgantown’s budget is $3.5 million shorter next year than this year.Voters are likely to fall along lines of how candidates have campaigned on bringing in additional revenue to the city.
Meanwhile, Morgantown Together, a political action committee, is endorsing candidates in each of the city’s 4 opposed races.
Councilwoman Nancy Ganz is defending her seat against candidate Bill Graham to represent the city’s 7th Ward.
Bill Kawecki, an incumbent, and Al Bonner are vying for a 2nd Ward seat on council.
Jay Redman and Noel Hoffman are the candidates for the city’s 6th Ward. Councilman Mike Fike chose not to run for reelection.
First Ward candidates include incumbent Ron Bane, George Papandreas and Rachel Fetty.
Polls in Morgantown are open from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Tucker has encouraged voters to pay attention to their precinct numbers for voting locations.
