MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown defeated Bridgeport 6-5 on Wednesday night from Mylan Park, handing the Class AA defending state champion its first loss.

“We had been on somewhat of a skid,” Morgantown coach Mark McCarty said. “But this was the best game that we’ve played in a long, long time. Our kids really wanted to win this game and to be able to handle that pressure makes me feel pretty good about them.

The Mohigans (11-10) scored five runs in the second inning, taking a 6-1 lead into the third. Bridgeport (17-1) chipped away with a run apiece in the fourth and fifth, along with two more runs in the sixth before Morgantown closed the door in the seventh.

“It says that we can play baseball,” McCarty said. “We knew going into the season that we could, we just haven’t always proven it. Hopefully this will be the one that turns things around for us.

“Last year, we beat the Class AAA state champion, the Class AA state champion and three other teams in the state tournament – and we had everyone back,” he continued. “So, why we’re 11-10? Who knows. But this has been the best team that we’ve played and our most solid game, for sure.”
