Man receives maximum sentence for second-degree murder

PRINCETON, W.Va.–A man who pleaded guilty earlier this month to second-degree murder was given a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison Thursday in Mercer County Circuit Court.

Deantre Scaife, 32, had originally been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death last August of 22-year-old Montcalm native Derek Tabor. Scaife pleaded guilty April 15 to second-degree murder.

The plea agreement is that the sentence is concurrent with Scaife’s federal sentence on drug charges, and that prosecution will not charge Scaife as a habitual offender or seek a longer sentence because he had a firearm.

Scaife will be ineligible for parole until he has served 20 years.
