Grafton police, U.S. marshals catch up with sexual assault suspect

GRAFTON, W.Va. — A sexual assault suspect who ran away from Taylor County police was apprehended and could face additional felony charges.

Derek Swiger was taken into custody Wednesday on sexual assault charges involving a minor.

Derek Adam Swiger 24, of Grafton was arrested Wednesday around 1:45 p.m. after running during an arrest about 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

He broke away from Grafton police while being handcuffed on sexual assault charges. Swiger is accused of having sex with a minor.

U.S. Marshals joined police and the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department in the search for Swiger Wednesday morning.

Swiger was seen leaving a residence where authorities believed he was hiding out. When they attempted to arrest him during a traffic stop, Swiger ran from police a second time and was subdued with a taser.

Swiger could also face charges for escape and fleeing from an officer.
