Gun rights group to continue its fight in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A gun rights advocate says he was taken by surprise when newly re-elected Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said he was done with the gun fight.

WV CDL President Keith Morgan said Jones’ decision to end his public stand against guns in public places was a bit of a shock, but also made sense.

“It’s a real emotional and hot button issue for the mayor and he’s gotten pretty animated in the past,” Morgan said Tuesday on MetroNews Talkline. “It’s a new demeanor we are seeing out of him and I honestly believe it’s a practical step on his part.”

Jones said Monday on Talkline he was done with the public debate over firearms and conceal carry permits. Jones has been vocal and passionate about his opposition to the allowance for guns to be carried in many city-owned buildings. However, the legislature has backed measures which are advocated by gun rights organizations like Morgan’s West Virginia Citizens Defense League.

Morgan said he thinks Jones is realizing the fight he’s been waging is one that is on a statewide level and not within the city’s borders. He said the mayor is wise to go back to the business of running the city and not spend any more time, energy, and resources on a fight being staged at the state house.

Despite the mayor’s pullback, Morgan said they aren’t declaring victory because the fight goes on.

“Our litigation with the City of Charleston is going to continue. The mayor has no intention of dropping out of that litigation nor do we,” Morgan said. “That will run to its legal conclusion and we still have quite a fight in the legislature on many issues.”

Morgan said Jones’ feelings on gun control are extreme in the eyes of most West Virginians. Morgan said while the mayor may have stopped publicly talking about it, his views on the Second Amendment are clearly documented.
