WVAWC postpones repair of large Charleston main

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia American Water postponed its repair to a 36-inch water transmission main on Charleston’s West Side Wednesday.

The company rescheduled the repair at the intersection of Florida Street and 3rd Avenue for next Monday and Tuesday. WVAWC Spokesperson Laura Jordan said they ran into some problems to safely install a manhole to make the repairs.

“We had scheduled to make the path and install the manhole today,” Jordan said. “We ran into some longer than anticipated time frame needed to operate the valve to get the shutdown that we needed to take the pressure off the pipe to do the work.”

She said that during the 24 hours needed to do the repairs, customers will be asked to voluntarily limit non-essential water use.

“We may make the repairs overnight Tuesday night,” she said. “However, we may begin it earlier and begin it during the day on Tuesday. We are going to try to alert our customers on Monday to let them know if everything is going as planned and try to give them a day’s notice.”

She said it’s no small job; the main is one of the largest in their entire system. She described the work that has to get done to do the repair.

“They actually have to cut in a hole to be able to access the inside of the pipe once they shut it down on either side,” Jones explained. “Once we pump the water out of the pipe we actually have to have someone go in there and make the repair on the inside.”

WVAWC confirmed in a statement that customers should not see any impact to their water service this week.
