FAYETTE COUNTY, W.Va. — Early voting began Saturday as Fayette County residents decide on a $39-million school bond to fund construction at seven campuses.
The election is June 13.
School bonds proposed in Fayette County in both 2001 and 2009 were overwhelmingly rejected.
If voters approve the $39 million bond, the county school board would secure an additional $25.1 million from the state, forming the bulk of a $66.5- million construction fund for the following projects:
— New Mount Hope Elementary School, $12.7 million
— New Collins Middle School, $28 million
— Renovations at Midland Trail High School, $17 million
— Renovations at Oak Hill High School, $2.6 million
— HVAC replacement at Ansted Middle School, $1.3 million
— Renovations for Valley High School’s athletic fields, $2.7 million
— Classroom addition at Fayette Plateau Vo-Tech, $650,000
Fayetteville High School and Meadow Bridge High School would close with the bond plan.
The building at Collins Middle School for seventh- and eighth-graders has been shut down since January because of structural issues and engineers have identified other problems at schools throughout Fayette County.
Early voting continues through June 10 at Montgomery City Hall, Danese Community Center and Fayetteville Memorial Building. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
