WVU completes purchase of former Mountain State University

MORGANTOWN W.Va. – West Virginia University has expanded its footprint in the Mountain State.

In a Monday release, President Gordon Gee confirmed the completion of the purchase of the former Mountain State University campus and assets in Beckley.

“This is truly a unique opportunity to better serve the citizens of southern West Virginia with niche and relevant academic programs that meet the needs of the region,” Gee said. “It is also an opportunity to partner with area colleges and universities on additional educational pathways.”

WVU expressed serious interest in the purchase in November 2014. The purchase is said to be an $8 million investment. That offer was made December 31.

The Mountain State University Board of Trustees approved the measure in January.

“As a native of Beckley I believe the arrival of WVU in Beckley is the most significant event in the history of our city,” said board chairman Max Beard.

WVU officials hope to begin classes as soon as fall 2016.
