MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Former Musselman High School standout Trevon Wesco, who’s entering his sophomore season at Lackawanna (Pa.) College, committed to West Virginia on Thursday night.
He becomes the Mountaineers’ first tight end commitment for the 2016 class and projects to be more of a passing-game threat than previous players at the position under Dana Holgorsen’ system.
“Wesco played wide receiver in high school, so he’s more of a pass-catching tight end,” said Rivals writer Keenan Cummings of WVSports.com. “In fact, he’s still learning to improve as a blocker.
“West Virginia wants a tight end who can stretch the field and create matchup problems. They certainly needed Cody Clay to block last year, but they’d like to do more with that position.”
Clay has only 18 catches during three seasons at West Virginia and Wesco made only five receptions as junior college freshman. Yet the 6-foot-5, 260-pounder sports top-end agility—he was a Class AAA all-state basketball player at Musselman—and also played quarterback for his high school team. His playing time was limited last season because Lackawanna favored two tight ends who signed with Division I programs: Julian Allen with Southern Miss and Jackson Miller with Stony Brook.
Lackawanna coaches suggest more FBS programs will pursue Wesco once he produces additional film this fall. He currently holds offers from UCF, Buffalo, Akron and Monmouth, with Penn State waiting to see how he progresses as a sophomore.
In 2014, West Virginia tried to attract Wesco as a preferred walk-on.
“He has a nice combo of size and speed, a matchup nightmare for the middle of most defenses and something the Mountaineers have not had in recent years,” Cummings said. “His junior college film shows that he has a good release off the line of scrimmage and great hands. He isn’t a burner but still has a step on most linebackers backpedaling.”
Wesco would become the sixth Lackawanna product to sign with WVU since Anthony Wood in 2008.
